Chinese Embassy Donates Books to Chinese Corner in Cultural Center Suriname
2014-11-11 05:26

The Chinese Embassy donated some books and equipment to the Chinese Corner in the Cultural Centre Suriname (CCS) on November 7. Ambassador Yang Zigang and Ms Nadia Becker, Director of CCS, attended the donation ceremony.

Ambassador Yang said in his remarks that the ties between China and Suriname can be dated back to 161 years ago. The local Chinese community has integrated into the Surinamese society now and the Chinese culture has been an essential part of the Surinamese culture. As the global influence of China develops, the relations between China and Suriname get closer and the bilateral people-to-people exchanges continuously increase, more and more Surinamese people have growing interest in China.

Last year under the support of Hanban, the Confucius Institute Headquarters in China, the Chinese Corner was established in CCS, which constitutes an important platform for Surinamese people to learn the language and culture of China. The Embassy hopes that this donation can benefit the Chinese Corner, and by holding activities like movie presentations and lectures in CCS in future, to showcase the Chinese culture and promote mutual understanding between the two peoples.

Ms Becker expressed her heartfelt thanks for the donation and commended the Chinese Corner on its operation. She said that CCS will take full advantage of the donated materials to enrich the Chinese corner and work with the Chinese embassy to let more Surinamese people get to know China and its culture.
